Our Mission
The Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival, established in 2009, is a fundraiser for the community of Cañon City. Proceeds from the festival not only benefit groups and organizations that assist with the weekend's festivities, but a proceeds also benefit the Royal Gorge RIO (formerly the Whitewater Kayak and Recreation Park or WKRP) organization. This grassroots, non-profit group supports the construction and river beautification project. Not only does the Royal Gorge RIO provide the perfect place to host the Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival, but it is also a tremendous asset to the community. Located in Centennial Park, the play waves provide focus point for river activities and a fun place to enjoy the Arkansas River.

History
Since 2009, the festival is excited to welcome locals and visitors to the Royal Gorge Region. We've revised our activity offering, keeping fan favorites in place and modifying some returning events, so please check back for more information on how you can be involved!
Back in 2001 an idea was hatched to create a Build Your Own Boat Race and community event in the summer to celebrate the Arkansas River. Through the years it has grown and in 2009 the Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival was formed to help establish a Whitewater Park in Cañon City. This festival was developed through the Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District, the Cañon City Whitewater Kayak and Recreation Park Committee, the Fremont Community Foundation, and Fremont Adventure Recreation as a fundraiser for the construction and continued expansion of the Whitewater Park, as well as contributions to Recreation District programs and FCF’s charitable causes.
There are many ways to enjoy the RGWF. Most events are held (or finish) at the pedestrian bridge near 4th Street. Enjoy food and drinks from our vendors along the Whitewater Park while watching the events. Entertainment will be held throughout the festival, including local performers.
With several different events to choose from, there is an opportunity for just about everyone to participate and have a good time. The events are designed so both beginners and those with experience can participate. In many situations we will provide all of the equipment you will need. It is fun to watch the events, but participating in the events will create a lifetime of memories. We have many different vendors at the festival ranging from whitewater and outdoor gear to jewelry. If you are hungry we have a great selection of food vendors to choose from, and yes we have vegetarian items as well. There is something for everyone at the RGWF.
